The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is a magical open air venue, the seating part of the auditorium being covered by its canopy, situated in the Kings Domain gardens off St. Kilda Rd., with a beautiful view of Melbourne and Alexandra Gardens to the north which, combined with the green gardens and the impressive canopy, creates a high spirited atmosphere in which to see a performance.
The construction in 1959 was a natural progression from businessman, music lover and violinist Sydney Myer being inspired by visiting the famed Hollywood Bowl in LA and also free open air Melbourne Symphony Orchestra concerts he initiated in 1929 and continue to this day, being held at the Myer Music Bowl.
It has hosted numerous legendary rock and pop concerts including R.E.M., Midnight Oil, Daft Punk, Crowded House, The Seekers, Kylie Minogue, Pet Shop Boys, James Brown and Paul McCartney.
