The Palais Theatre is one of the grand old dames of Melbourne's architectural landscape and rich assembly of historic theatres. It is the largest seated theatre in Australia, with a capacity of almost 3,000.
It was originally known as Palais Pictures until the 1950's and was designed by New Zealand-born architect Henry Eli-white and opened in 1927.
For most of its early life, used as a super-sized movie theatre and in more recent decades, the Palais Theatre has left us with a sumptuous Art Deco venue, magical if a little dowdy in places, though lovably so.
It has been host to countless greats in its life as a concert venue, from Simple Minds to The Church, Kylie's famous late 90's Intimate and Live tour, Weird Al Yankovic, America, Rockwiz Live shows and the Human League.
