Her Majesty's Theatre on Exhibition St is one of the jewels in the glittering ring of late 19th - early 20th Century theatres in the eastern half of the Melbourne CBD. With a very cosy, huge 2,800 seat auditorium, it has had a history almost as dramatic as the productions that have graced its boards over the last century and more. From its builder Jules Joubert going bankrupt by end of construction to Dame Nellie Melba initially refusing to perform there due to the acoustics at one stage, Her Majesty's took its current name from Queen Victoria eight months before her death in 1900. The Russian ballet superstar Anna Pavlova performed at Her Maj's in 1926 and 1929 and since then, it has played host to such memorable musicals as Mamma Mia!, Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding.
